The UCLU Wilderness Medicine Society was set up by eight UCL students in 2007. The aim of the Society is to bring the exciting, yet often inaccessible world of Wilderness Medicine to the students of University College London and to inspire them to get out into the wilderness and use the skills and knowledge they acquire through the Society.

The Society was set up with the intention that it be open to all UCL students, not just medical students. We have over 90 members from a wide range of faculties, making us one of the most successful new societies within UCL Union. We have had a fantastic first year having generated lots of interest from the student body and look forward to an even bigger and better year ahead. We were also nominated for Society of the Year.

Our emphasis is on the development of practical skills and all our events are geared towards equipping members to be able to deal with medical emergencies in the most hostile of environments. Through talks, discussions and practical workshops, we hope to give our members the competency and confidence to provide assistance when it is most needed.

In our first year of existence, we have run two wilderness first aid training workshops, several lectures from leading members of the wilderness medicine community, and sent a delegation to the National Wilderness Medicine Conference where we were awarded the prize for “Best Team”. In addition, through establishing contacts with various organizations several of our members were able to qualify as Wilderness First Responders at a greatly reduced cost.

If you want to know more about what we do, drop us an email at info@ucluwildernessmedicine.com or sign up to our mailing list and we shall send you regular updates, or you could join our Facebook group.

Prof. Jim Ryan
Patron

We are very fortunate that Professor Jim Ryan (UCL) has agreed to be the Patron of the Society. Prof. Ryan has recently retired from the UCL Leonard Cheshire Centre for Conflict Recovery and his career has led him to encounter almost every aspect of wilderness medicine. He has vast experience of war and disaster medicine and has also been a consultant in accident and emergency
medicine for University College Hospitals NHS Trust for a number of years. Our inaugural lecture, entitled The Medical Response to Terrorism was given by Prof. Ryan to a full theatre, and we are very grateful to him for his ongoing support.

W
ilderness medicine - also known as expedition medicine - is the practice of medicine where definitive care is more than an hour away, often days to weeks away. The practice of wilderness medicine is defined by difficult patient access, limited equipment, and environmental extremes. The development of wilderness medicine has paralleled the evolution of pre-hospital care in the urban setting.
