Every week London’s tube system grinds to a halt due to casualties on the track and current climates make major incidents an awful possibility. This scenario illustrates exceptionally well the paradox of being far from help in an urban environment; assessing, intubating and boarding casualties in impossibly small spaces under trains and management of an exceptionally hazardous scene. This scenario day introduces delegates to moving themselves and casualties from beneath real trains with equipment available to any pre-hospital care giver in a genuine, but safe situation at a training platform at Acton Town station. Team skills will be pushed to the limit in extreme circumstances. This experience really promotes respect for the skill, efficiency and effectiveness of pre-hospital care provided on London’s Underground.

Members of the national Wilderness Medicine Society with all levels of knowledge are welcome as full training is included by highly qualified trainers -- helping younger students and pushing and challenging more experienced medics.

The day starts at the London Diving Chamber – a hyperbaric decompression chamber that treats divers with decompression sickness. Expert diving doctors and chamber staff will give us a fantastic insight into the hidden dangers of scuba diving and the tiny bubbles of nitrogen that can kill. They’ll also show us inside the chamber and how all the amazing machinery works.

The afternoon session will be held at Tower lifeboat station, beneath Waterloo Bridge. Experts from the RNLI and other marine-based organisations will talk to us about the hazards of water rescue and their experiences on the water. There will be a demonstration of rescue techniques and equipment used on the water and a tour of the station.

This will be a highly-sought after Sunday event with a very limited number of delegates. It will be especially of interest to those fascinated by the marine environment, whether floating above it or deep underneath!

The Metropolitan Police Investigation Forensics Unit is heavily involved on a day-to-day basis in murders and other criminal activity. Tying in excellently with the Saturday talks on the aftermarth of the 7/7 bombings. Crime Scene Manager for London Naimh Smith of the real life CSI unit who worked in the bombings and Tsumani zones of Thailand will co-ordinate a day giving insight and hands on opportunities to interested delegates.

Every victim, every amputated limb, every item of clothes removed from victims in A+E/theatre are evidence...important factors that the medical staff often forget in the fight for patients’ lives. The aim of this session is to highlight and explore of this conflict of interest and inform hospital doctors/pre-hospital care givers of the future of the forensic procedures and needs when treating victims and criminals.

The wilderness is fraught with dangers, but how prepared are you to deal with them? Would you know what to do if two of your fellow adventurers fractured limbs whilst ascending a ridge?

Take a trip into deepest Hertfordshire and get up-close and personal with some of the injuries that might beset an expedition and learn how to deal with them using only the limited kit you might have with you and whatever the environment can offer.

You will encounter, fractures, bleeding, injured climbers, bites and stings. You will need to improvise stretchers using just your shoes and a small tree. All this in a setting almost as wild as the
jungles of Borneo!
